Correlation between maturation, growth spurt, and the progression of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

چکیده
Background The tendency is to start conservative treatment at a lesser Cobb angle, but this can be warranted only if the scoliosis is progressing. Duval-Beaupère [1,2] (1971, 1984) concluded that an “evolutive scoliosis” is progressing in a linear way during two periods: one from birth until the onset of puberty, and the second one during puberty until maturation. Changes in the progression occur suddenly between these two phases (P point) as the first minor signs of puberty occur. Each patient has their own evolution rate; therefore, using clinical signs to determine the exact maturation state of a scoliotic patient and the risk of progression can be difficult.

Comparison of Respiratory Muscle Electromyography between Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis and Healthy Subjects
Purpose: Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal deformities that affect chest wall mechanics. Scoliosis results in ventilator disorders and respiratory muscle weakness. However, the mechanism of these disorders is still unknown. The main objective of this study was to identify the intensity of respiratory muscles activity in patients with idiopathic scoliosis compare with healthy indi...
متن کاملPredicting growth and curve progression in the individual patient with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: design of a prospective longitudinal cohort study
BACKGROUND Scoliosis is present in 3-5% of the children in the adolescent age group, with a higher incidence in females. Treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is mainly dependent on the progression of the scoliotic curve. There is a close relationship between curve progression and rapid (spinal) growth of the patient during puberty. However, until present time no conclusive method was fo...
متن کاملPredicting Curve Progression in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis - An Outline of Different Indicators of Growth
Several methods have been studied to predict the timing and magnitude of the pubertal growth spurt in the individual child. Different maturity indicators can be used like skeletal age in different areas, the Risser sign, status of the triradiate cartilage, Tanner stage of sexual maturation, age of the thelarche and menarche, and several body length dimensions. Furthermore, the trend in total bo...
متن کاملEvaluation of Patient Outcome and Satisfaction after Surgical Treatment of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Using Scoliosis Research Society-30
Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) may lead to physical and mental problems. It also can adversely affect patient satisfaction and the quality of life. In this study, we assessed the outcomes and satisfaction rate after surgical treatment of AIS using scoliosis research society-30 questionnaire (SRS-30). Methods: We enrolled 135 patients with AIS undergoing corrective surgery...
متن کاملReducibility as a prognosis factor of progression in idiopathic scoliosis
Background Scoliosis is a disease that develops during growth and knowledge of scalability is essential for making treatment decisions. Of the many factors analyzed, are evidence of sex, topography, menarche , age, rapid growth spurt the magnitude of the curve, Risser 0 1 and the imbalance of occipital axis> 10 mm. The degree of reductibility or flexibility is also seen as a predictor of progre...
